Growing up in Margaret River during the rise of the wine industry, Phil Sexton was captivated by winemaking and the opportunity it offered to engage in agriculture, art and science.
This story of single vineyard wines begins with anything but a single theme. Craft brewing, coffee roasting, winemaking in Margaret River and a brief stint in the Air Force gave Phil Sexton the "benefit of hindsight, to do it all over again" when he took a 'giant step' to the Yarra Valley in his quest to produce pre-eminent cool climate Pinot Noir & Chardonnay.
Under the direction of Steve Flamsteed - chef, cheesemaker, skiing instructor and (to the team) head winemaker - Giant Steps (named after a John Coltrane jazz album) focuses exclusively on singe vineyard sites in the Yarra Valley. The winemaking process involves minimal intervention and is aimed at finely fingerprinting the personality and character of each site.
A visit to the cosmopolitan Cellar Door in Healesville reveals that while wine is the main focus, the pursuits that came before Giant Steps are still an enduring passion.
