For the Australian wine community, creating a “landmark” event is about showcasing our best wine to some of the world’s most influential wine professionals.
How do we go about delivering this landmark event? We source around 250 wines that exemplify Australia’s ultimate wine offering; recruit industry legends to present them; and inviting a group of the world’s most influential wine professionals to taste them!
Welcome to the A+ Australian Wine Landmark Australia Tutorial.
The event has been held in Australia for the past two years since 2009, and is one of the most significant investments by the wine community in showcasing its fine wine to an international audience.
The objective of the A+ Australian Wine Landmark Australia Tutorial is to create an “alumni” of Australian wine ambassadors who will share their experiences with wine consumers and educators around the world.
The Landmark Australia concept began in 2009, with the first tutorial in the Barossa Valley, when 12 international wine experts spent five days immersed in tasting and learning about Australia’s fine wine offering.
In 2010, the journey continued with another 14 influential wine professionals visiting Australia and the Yarra Valley for the second Landmark Australia Tutorial.
The A+ Australian Wine Landmark Australia Tutorial is described as an educational course that celebrates Australia’s fine wines from the past, present and future – but it is much more than that. Each year, the participants have immersed themselves in not only Australian wine – but our culture, our people and our stories.
The event includes tutored master classes and dinners which provide the platform for comparison, contrast and conversation.
Imagine a guided fortified tasting with rare and exquisite aged samples dating back to 1910; or being immersed in a single historic perspective master class of wines valued at more than $40,000 – some of which will never be tasted again.
These were just some of the experiences that the 14 participants at the 2010 event enjoyed in the Yarra Valley.
In 2009, our participants tasted 248 wines and were taken through a series of master classes by such industry luminary as Peter Gago; Robert Hill-Smith; James Halliday; Brian Croser and Ian Riggs to name a few.
The event creates a forum for wine loves to discover and debate Australia’s finest wines. As we move towards the third Landmark Australia Tutorial, the event has undoubtedly become one of the most authoritative and extensive explorations of our leading wines.
The tutorial is just one chapter in the Landmark Australia story, which is aimed at demonstrating some of our best wines, our best regions and our best stories.
The Landmark Australia concept continues around the world, with a range of complementing events held on a regular basis. In 2010, Landmark Australia events were held in Singapore and New York, with many more planned for 2011.
The Landmark debate has only just begun and we look forward to welcoming you as a part of it in the future.
The A+ Australian Wine Landmark Australia Tutorial is not only a wine journey but also a culinary journey through Australia’s regions.
In the two years of the event, our international visitors have experienced A+ Australian Wine, coupled with a culinary experience not to be rivalled.
In 2009, the Barossa took centre stage, with participants staying at the award-winner the Louise and dining at the acclaimed on-site restaurant Appellation.
The 2009 event was held in the middle of winter and what better way to ensure the wines shone than to match them with the earthy and honest flavours of southern Australian fare?
The menu featured some of southern Australia’s beset winter game, crisp vegetables and an array of fresh seafood from the Southern Ocean.
Highlights included the duck egg pasta; pheasant with mushroom strudel and buttered glaze and the quail pie to name a few.
In 2010, the regional focus moved to the Yarra Valley and for the participants, the region did not disappoint.
From fine dining experience of Bellevedre to the oysters and pizzas and casual dining approach at Giant Steps, our international visitors were constantly amazed as to the quality and diversity of the Australian fare on offer.
The mouth-watering rack of lamb at Yering Station; the hot strawberry soufflé at Bellevedre; and the prosciutto and spicy pork pizza at Giant Steps all rated a mention as highlights of the week!
